ORIGINS OF ADVENTURE
You know, most of the time that I've been here, I've been hanging out at my friend's house and not getting out much. Today, though, with some things to take care of, I found myself on the way to SM City Bacoor, a large, multi-level mall similar to the SM in Cebu. While there, I decided to stop in the cinema to see X-Men Origins: Wolverine which opened today in the Philippines.
Getting to the mall was another matter. This is definitely not Cebu City, where you can walk out your front door and there are taxis everywhere. After today, I truly miss that. In fact, I'm missing a lot of things about Cebu right now. Anyway, out here in Cavite, a small town about an hour, in traffic anyway, from Manila, transportation is a whole different ball game. I started out going to the trike stand at the front of the subdivision where my friend lives. A trike is basically a motorbike with a sidecar to carry a passenger. Although I've seen trikes on the main road, none of these guys wanted to go to the mall. It is far after all. They all recommended the jeep.
The jeepney is the most famous mode of transportation here in the Philippines. It is basically a jeep extended into a small bus. They pack as many people inside, like sardines, as they can and they ride around with no aircon. It's just not for me. I've ridden it once or twice, and have little desire to do so again. I got one of the trikes to just take me to the main highway, where I intended to catch a taxi. Not being Cebu, though, I waited for what seemed like almost an hour, in the rain, to find one that didn't already have passengers. It's not like they were coming by every few seconds either.
So the taxi got me to the mall, at a cost probably double what it would be in Cebu, and I started trying to take care of some business. Unfortunately, unlike the big malls in Cebu, the things I needed were nowhere to found. I was told to search in Manila or Makati. That finished, I decided to stop in to Burger King for some fried chicken. Yeah, did I mention that every fast food joint has fried chicken here? Yes, even McDonalds, Wendy's and the Chinese place. Finally I went to see Wolverine.
The theatre was awesome. Big screen and great sound. All the great trailers were shown before the movie, Transformers 2, Star Trek, Harry Potter... In fact, many of these were shown twice with different versions of the trailer. Finally, the movie itself rolled around and it was great fun. It's no Bryan Singer X-Men, but it sure beats that last one quite easily. Huge action, big stunts and many cool characters. I would certainly see it again when iTunes time rolls around.
I don't even want to write about the expense of getting a taxi home. Traffic was outrageous, so the guy wanted extra cash. This definitely isn't Cebu. Does it sound like I want to go to Cebu again?
