HAIR LOSS

No, this isn't a post about male pattern baldness. This is about my dreads, grown for over four years, finally being removed. Cut off and consigned to the trash bin. My long hair is no more. This is something I had been thinking about for some time actually, but the time finally came to do it.

Jerry had been telling me for a long time that I need to cut it, and shave my face, but I thought that was just what she wanted. Eventually, though, I decided I would ask ten people, mostly girls, and see what the general consensus was. All except one said cut it! Also I asked one of my clients who explained that long hair and beard makes one appear as a bad guy or theif in KOrean culture and so it could be a hinderance here. That was fine with me.

Last Saturday, me Jerry and Seung Bin, her little brother, went to a major electronics area called Yongsan. There Sueng Bin needed to get his Nintendo DS fixed so that it could use some type of memory cards or something. I also had an opportunity to look for cheap digital cameras. They were few and far between, but even so, the clerks in the store don't seem to want to sell them. Even if they have a cheap 2 Megapixel camera, they come up with some reason why it is either broken or m,issing something, and then try to sell me the latest greatest 10 Megapixel giant. I just want something cheap for this page, and something I don't care if I lose, drop or break it.

We also looked at the Apple store there to see prices on Macs. Unfortunately, the prices on Apple products has gone up significantly to match the quickly dfropping Korean Won currency. A Mac that used to cost 1000000 Won, is now 1500000. Anyway, after getting our fill of Yongsan, the plan was to find some good food. The next stop was a major foreigner area called Itaewon.

In Itaewon we found something of a small "African street" type area, and there was a good barber shop. I never thought I was see so many black people in one place in this country. None appeared to be American, though, not that I could tell from looking, but when they spoke, it was clear they were African. When I went into the barber shop, one guy asked if I just wanted a trip or to have it "edged up" a bit. I said, "No. It's all going." You shoul dhave seen the looks on their faces. Everyone there was quite surprised.

After a quick cut, though, the deed was done. Strangely, Sally happened to call from Australia while I was getting cut, and Jerry held the phone to my ear so I could talk to Sally as the barber did his work. So far things don't appear to be going to well for Victor and Sally in Australia. We'll see how that turns out. After the cut we went to a Sushi place for some lunch and then we were off again.

We rounded out the evening by going to a cinema near the station where we got off the subway. We saw Moon Princess. It was nothing like I expected and not very good. I heard that most American movies are cut to be under 90 minutes in Korea, so they can show it more times per day, and this movie definitely felt like it was missing a lot. I also thought it might be from a popular novel that offered more than they could fit in a movie script. Either way, it wasn't special.
